I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that, in no other country on earth, is my story even possible. I was raised with the help of a grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton's Army during World War II and a grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas.

But what we know, what we have seen, is that America can change. It is that promise that has always set this country apart, that through hard work and sacrifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams but still come together as one American.
